Identifying Statistically Significant Differences in Pay

Not all differences in pay are indicative of illegitimate pay disparities. Often observed differences in pay are simply due to chance. In order for the US Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) to wage an effective case against a contractor that pay disparities exist, they must either show that those pay disparities are "statistically significant” or that there is some other documentary evidence that points to incontrovertible evidence of discrimination in pay. This video provides a brief overview for the non-statistician on the topic of statistical significance and how it can help you uncover inequities in pay.
